Dive Site Information

Touchdown Reef is a pretty cool reef due to its location. It sits just to the east of Pompano alleges and is comprised of scattered reef with sand patches and rock pockets. What I like about this spot is it’s kind of in between the main reef and the inner reef so most people don’t tend to go there. The site is surrounded by sand so if you wander too far to the east or too far to the west you will get into the Sandy Desert. It’s best to stay on top of the reef. Excellent place for looking for lobsters.

The Dive Plan:

2 Dives 2 Locations

We start off the day with our first dive on Touchdown Reef. Then it's off to our second dive which is typically a drift dive somewhere on the third reef system. The drift dive location is selected based on conditions and visibility.

The departure dock location for this dive trip is located in Pompano Beach.

Our Local Reefs

Touchdown Reef is part of our inner reef system. Essentially they are sub briefs that lie in between the main reef and what we call the drop off or Pompano ledges. Most of these reefs systems are relatively flat was only about 10 or 15 foot of rise out of the sand. These reefs tend to change quite a bit especially after large storms due to the movement of sand in the area. Touchdown Reef got its name because it is located off of Pompano Beach in front of two condos that look like goalposts. So hence the name touchdown reef, not a lot of thought went into naming this one.

Resident Marine Life

There are usually large schools of fish around the reef. It is not uncommon to see nurse sharks, giant stingrays and large schools of tropical fish. This is an excellent spot also to look for turtles and if you pay attention you can find some moray eels hiding in and around the rocks.
